Clouds moodboard
(images from the internet)

Producing a mood board on clouds has been a great starting point for brain storming and developing ideas, as I'm able to visualise different colours, forms, moods and meanings of what clouds could possibly be. I havent just focused on clouds, I wanted to think on a larger scale - what do they feel like? what immediately comes to mind? what do clouds mean? where do they come from? I have so many questions regarding clouds as they are such important part of the world, but also so unusual and delicate looking.
Clouds mind map

By producing a written mind map, I am able to record rough but informative notes on clouds, I find mind maps very helpful during research and planning, as I’m able to have a bit more structure and make links between different ideas and subjects, which will then help me develop even more ideas. I have focused more on climate change as this is an area I am passionate about and believe I will be able to create an expressive, emotional piece with my personal thoughts and feelings towards it. I will incorporate climate change into my work throughout the final major project, but I would also love to go into natural disasters as I'm already feeling inspired.
Books/techniques/ideas mood board
(images from the internet)

Here I have created a mood board with images I found online, which will inform my books, the concept is based around climate change and all the horrible aspects of it - what is happening to the environment, government, how weather is impacted, etc. (outside of the book), then hope, progression and positive energy inside the book - what can be done for climate change, encouragement, etc. This is also reflected in the notes I took after completing the clouds mind map.
Campbell stokes recorder - research for 3D making lesson (information from the internet)

I started researching different machines/devices that related to weather, we thought it would be interesting to develop creatively (when discussing ideas).
Campbell stokes recorders are used to measure the intensity of sunshine, the rays are recorded on calibrated paper, leading to a burn. Both the intensity and position of the burns give the time and strength of the sunshine. I will use this information to design a sketch of either my own weather machine, or a data sheet showing statistics of clouds. I used the structure and design of this device to inform the making of the 3D model.
Theme Research
Theme research is important for me to do in order to grasp a more in depth understanding of theme, a starting point and what ideas can grow from a word, fact, feeling, story, etc. about weather and climate change.
I have used the internet and my personal knowledge to research synonyms, definitions, antonyms and etymology on weather and climate change. I will use this information to produce experimental work based on synonyms and antonyms (a versus concept would be interesting to contrast both).
Atmospheric pressure
Climate
Definition I found from the online dictionary: the state of the atmosphere at a particular place and time as regards heat, cloudiness, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc.
Synonyms I found online
Meteorology
Weather

First known as "global warming", the term is believed to have been created by geochemist Wallace Broecker from Columbia University in 1975 - NASA claims. "Climate change" then came about in 1979 from a National Academy of Science study on carbon dioxide. - information found from the internet.
Definition found from the online dictionary: a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.

Recording weather and light with drawing machines
For an alternative research opportunity, we spent the afternoon constructing drawing machines from wooden sticks, string and tape, then adding the materials - charcoal, pencils, pens, etc. This allowed the wind to record messy, fun and random sketches, that would help develop ideas and inspire new ways of researching weather.
Next we worked together as a group to experiment with ink on a large piece of paper - these photos are from the wiltshire college creative instagram page. I found this activity really enjoyable as everyone was having fun and we managed to produce a cool, abstract, expressive ink drawing. The artwork recorded shadows and the strength of the wind however, it was quite difficult to move about/reach the paper.

After completing these weather recording experiments, I felt inspired to create my own weather machine/experimental pieces at home.
Activity one: I used a mini easel I already had, string, paint brushes and acrylic paint and placed the easel out in my garden to record the stormy conditions that day. This created messy, colourful, abstract strokes.
Activity two: Using a skipping rope (relates to outside and weather can affect momentum of skipping) , acrylic paint and paper. I dipped the skipping rope into different colours of paint and started using different skipping techniques, this activity was more succesful as the paint was spread across the paper more.
Activity three: Using coloured pencils, a compass and paper I completed an observational drawing by using the clouds outside. I wanted this to be more abstract, instead of normal clouds. I also observed how the clouds felt/their possible moods - some angry, sad, happy (etc.) and showcased this by using cool and warm colours and alternating the shapes and lines.

London trip
Natural History Museum

On the 21st of March, we visited Kensington, London to explore the Natural History Museum and the Design Museum.
This plays a major part in the research process, as I was able to take photographs, produce sketches and find really interesting topics that work well together (consumerism, waste, weather and climate change), from both the museums.
This experience was so so enjoyable, I was so overwhelmed by the amount of major history, shocking facts, beautiful artworks, extreme architecture, etc. I am very excited to start producing work, and letting my ideas run as far as possible so my art is imaginative, relatable to an audience, meaningful and personal.

uSEFUL INFORMATION
I was determined to take as many photographs as possible - some that related to weather and climate change and some that didn't. This way I can combine and open doors to wacky, fun ideas. I found a ton of information on waste, climate change, animals, volcanoes, crystals and stones - I am going to use this information for conceptualising, creating textures and patterns.

STONES AND CRYSTALS
As I started to think about including consumerism into my work, I found the crystals and stones useful for not only their stunning appearance, but how they are known to be taken away from their original homes (caves, etc.) and used for man made objects like jewellery, that are constantly sold.
Potential messaging to include in work - to influence others to be grateful for what they have and not to ruin/take away from the earth.

ANIMALS, FOSSILS AND BONES
As photography is one of my main passions aside from illustration, I wanted to achieve professional, well shot and clear pictures, showcasing various effects. To do this I altered the aperture, shutter speed, exposure, zoom, focused settings constantly.
I am so glad I did this asa lot of the photos turned out amazing and inspire me to create even more and consider things like lighting, composition, (etc.) in my artwork.

Alternative research activity - analysing my my 6 year old sisters art based on weather

This piece was created using Procreate, I simply told her to "draw weather", and this is how she interpreted that request/task.
In this picture I can see a colourful house on a hill, a rainbow, rain, a cloud, blue sky, sun and a girl with pink hair, wearing a pink dress. It reminds me of my drawings from when I was young, its so interesting to see our developing artwork through the years.
From looking closely at the drawing, I can tell she has drawn inspiration from Peppa Pig, the layout, the house, the hill, the character, the muddy/rainy puddles is very similar - thats her primary research! The piece makes me want to step into my infant/younger years again to experience the memories all over again.
The picture shows a range of weather types occurring at the same time, the picture is busy and fun.
I am going to use this artwork and analysis to inform my idea generation process - what types of weather do I want to use in my finished pieces? What techniques? This piece is so expressive so I will take away from the techniques my sister has used.
Theme Moodboards
I have created a range of mood boards using several 'British Journal of Photography' magazines, to explore the themes that will be included in my final outcomes. I have experimented with collage techniques learnt from my previous project 'Self and Place', tissue paper, blank ink pen for pattern/mark making, felt shapes, yellow thread to represent maps and an unused photography colour sheet. I was also inspired by works from The Design Museum in London.

Transcribed casual interview with my mum (age 40)
Me: What are your thoughts on climate change?
Lucy: I don't really know..haha I mean I wish could do more to help, I try and do my bit.
Me: yeah..
Lucy: I wouldn't say I'm as passionate as you but I've definitely thought about it more as things have gotten worse. Remember we watched that David Attenborough thing!
Me: yeah I loved it
Lucy: We definitely use a lot less plastic i've noticed cause I'm the only one who takes the recycling out (laughing). But yeah..I don't know its hard to comment on it i'm not fully caught up.
Me: Do you think the younger generation are more responsible for raising awareness and doing more for the planet?
Lucy: mmm..thats hard cause i don't think its fair to blame anyone or point out a certain group of people for not doing their bit or like..caring but um..I would say yeah I think young people are very passionate about the planet and i've seen a lot of protests and stuff on the news
Me: Ok thanks..thats really helpful
Which age group consumes the most in the UK?
25 - 34 year olds were the most active in online shopping in 2020 - information from the internet. Of course, this makes sense as younger people are most often still in education/part time employment, therefore, they probably have less of an income. 25 - 34 is still young, they most likely have a stable income and bills to pay, but splurge on things like clothing, shoes, technology, make-up, etc.

presentation techniques
(images from the internet)
Photo frames arrangement

Using shape, composition, pattern and space, this technique is useful for multiple pieces of artwork as it gives an alternative structure and helps lead the eye to different points. Could the arrangement represent a timeline or story? The different frames also add a variety of colour, shapes, textures and pattern. I love how smaller frames are used beside the larger frames, it gives off a bubble/ floating effect. I definetly want to use a frame for my digital outcome however, I don't think I will use this technique as I don't have multiple digital pieces/ it wouldn't suit my piece.
decorated frame

I have used this technique before, by rolling old magazines into strips and sticking them down onto a face shape (this was for our last project, 'Self and Place'.) If I was to use this method, I would use a book, magazine or newspaper that includes weather, waste or consumerism. Otherwise, I could create a pattern or use colours that relate to weather. The pattern/texture reminds me of a garage door, as it resembles the same look/effect. I also really like the contrasting colours, some dark and some light to keep the frame busy.
Printed work stuck to the wall with coloured tape

Again, this is a great way to showcase multiple pieces of art, particularly of the same style - see picture on the left for reference. I think this would be a fantastic way to present prints as they have the same texture. The small piece of tape allows you to focus more on the artwork and composition however, it is till an effective but simplistic presentation technique, it reminds me of a large sketchbook page on a wall - it feels more personal.
Canvas with bold text/pattern background

I absolutely adore this technique! It is so expressive, free, loud and busy, I believe it would suit my oil painting perfectly. The black and white writing/pattern contrasts well with the colour paintings - allows them to stand out. If I was to use this technique, I would include positive phrases, words or quotes that relate to climate change, waste and consumerism - to motivate people to act on the current situation. This would be done on a large sheet of paper, using black ink/paint.
Hanging canvas from ceiling

This technique relates to weather as its a floating canvas up high, which could relate to sky, clouds, rain, etc. It would be more suitable for a larger canvas, as mine is only an A3. An alternative solution would be to have the canvas hang from long rope or wire, and having the wall as a background so it's more visible.
